Did Technology Kill Libraries?

Libraries It's not only the library that will be phased out. We have already lost things like video rental stores and book stores. One of the next things to go is most likely the big box retailers like Best Buy. It's just too hard to compete with Amazon.

LibraryIf you or your child had to do research for a paper where would you look? If you asked that question 15 years ago I think most people would answer “The Library”. In the year 2015 if you ask that same question I would bet the answers would be Google, Internet, Smart phone, but would anyone think of the library anymore?

Going To The Library – A Thing Of The Past

I can remember as a kid the day I got my library card, it was probably somewhere around 1995 and I spent all summer walking to the library to trade in my books for a few new ones. By the year 2000 anything I wanted to read I would just find on the computer. Even at the libraries people weren’t reading books anymore they were waiting for a turn on the computers, and as more and more people started getting computers and laptops and smart phones the libraries started to empty out.

It’s not only the library that will be phased out. We have already lost things like video rental stores and book stores. One of the next things to go is most likely the big box retailers like Best Buy. It’s just too hard to compete with Amazon. There hasn’t been a single new mall constructed in America since 2006, a very bad omen but I guess a good one for human progress(and online stores).

One thing is for sure, that we are moving rapidly into a new era where I believe it will be harder and harder to compete, especially in the technology fields. We all have to think about the future and prepare ourselves for the upcoming changes in this modern society.
